Heart attacks are caused by low blood flow to the heart tissue. This can happen by: fatty plaques, calcified plaques, sudden vessel spasm, increased heart tissue beyond supply, and rhythm abnormalities affecting pumping. All of these things quickly lead to heart muscle death which can lead to cardiac death if left untreated within a very short time frame.
